19th Working Meeting of South American Specialists in Aquatic Mammals (19th RT) and XIII Latin American Society of Specialists in Aquatic Mammals Congress (XIII SOLAMAC)

Praia do Forte | Bahia | Brazil

September 11th to 15th

About

The biannual event "Working Meeting of South American Specialists in Aquatic Mammals (RT)", and "SOLAMAC Congress (Latin American Society of Specialists in Aquatic Mammals)" is the most important scientific forum in Latin America on the research and conservation of aquatic mammals, considered vital for the balance of the environments in which they live. The event originated in the 1980s, with the initial studies on aquatic mammals in Latin America and concerns with their conservation and of the environments in which they live. The last RT happened in Lima, Peru, at the beginning of November 2018. In the final plenary session of SOLAMAC, the candidacy of Northeast Brazil, more specifically Bahia, was accepted for the next conference.

Presentation

RT and SOLAMAC

Since 1984, the Latin American scientific community gathered biannually to discuss aspects related to aquatic mammals in these countries during the Working Meetings of South American Specialists in Aquatic Mammals (RT). In 1994, at the end of the 4th RT in Florianópolis, Brazil, the need for a society to bring together researchers in aquatic mammals, support their research and conservation, as well as to promote their importance for the ecosystems, became evident. Thus, in 1996, a group of experts established the “Latin American Society of Specialists in Aquatic Mammals (SOLAMAC)” during the 7th RT in Viña del Mar, Chile.

Theme

Traditionally, there is a central theme for the meeting, which will guide its activities, such as talks, plenaries and round tables.  Aiming to integrate the development of human activities with aquatic mammal conservation, the theme of the 19th RT/XIII SOLAMAC will be

“Aquatic Mammals in the Anthropocene: Challenges and Conservation Perspectives”

approached in five broad themes, which will guide all activities:

  • Marine debris (Ocean and River Pollution and its impacts on aquatic mammals)

  • Bycatch (accidental mortality of aquatic mammals in fishing nets)

  • Acoustic Pollution (anthropogenic noise in the ocean and its impacts on aquatic mammals)

  • Shipstrikes (collisions between ships and aquatic mammals)

  • Management (bridging the gap between scientific knowledge and public policies and actions for the conservation of aquatic mammals and their habitats)
